Most companies do not suffer from a shortage of software.
They have CRMs, finance systems, ticketing tools, communication platforms, data warehouses, dashboards, admin portals, and automation tools.
Yet important work still depends on someone checking several systems, interpreting the situation, messaging another person, waiting for approval, updating a record, and remembering to follow up later.
The applications store data and provide functions, but they rarely control how work moves across the organization. Each system understands its own domain. The business process exists in the gaps between them.
That is why a company can be highly digitized and still operate manually.
The missing layer is execution orchestration: a system that understands the business case, maintains its state, gathers context from connected applications, evaluates rules, assigns ownership, requests decisions, triggers actions, and records the outcome.
Technically, this requires more than point-to-point integration. It needs a durable execution model. A workflow instance may live for minutes, days, or months. It must survive service restarts, delayed callbacks, human waiting periods, duplicate events, and partial failures.
A workflow engine, event bus, case model, policy service, identity layer, integration adapters, and audit store each solve part of the problem. The value comes from making them operate as one controlled runtime.
Central orchestration provides visibility and control, but it can become a monolith if every business detail is embedded inside one engine. A better design keeps domain systems authoritative for their own data while the execution layer coordinates state, decisions, and actions across them.
Integration is rarely clean. Systems use different identifiers, data models, authentication mechanisms, and failure semantics. Some provide webhooks; others require polling. Some actions are reversible; others are not. The execution layer must normalize these differences without pretending they do not exist.
