SKB Powerless Flood Shutter Strengthens Data Centre Flood Resilience
Flooding can cause extensive damage to data centre electrical systems, cooling infrastructure and other mission-critical equipment. Protection systems must therefore remain deployable even when power is interrupted or personnel cannot safely access the affected area.
SKB’s Powerless Auto-Close Flood Shutter uses a gravity-drop mechanism to close automatically without mains electricity or backup power. The system can be activated through a disaster-warning signal, allowing flood barriers across multiple openings to be deployed through a group control system.
Because no manual handling is required, the shutter can respond quickly while reducing reliance on personnel during an emergency. Its fail-safe operation is particularly relevant to data centres, where flooding and electrical disruption may occur simultaneously.
The flood shutter has been tested in accordance with BS 851188-1:2019+A1:2021, the British standard for flood resistance products. Witness testing by SIRIM Malaysia demonstrated minimal water leakage over seven days under water depths of up to 1,200 mm and 2,400 mm. The system is engineered to resist substantial water pressure while maintaining a practical, reusable and long-lasting configuration.
Suitable applications include data centre entrances, loading and service areas, equipment rooms, underground access points and other openings exposed to surface-water ingress. After deployment, the shutter can be reset for continued protection against future flood events.
By combining standards-based performance with automatic, power-independent deployment, SKB’s flood shutter provides an additional layer of resilience for facilities where operational continuity and asset protection are critical.
