Nicolas Heess is a Research Scientist and Director of Robotics at Google DeepMind, London. His research is focused on bringing AI to the physical world to create the next generation of general purpose robots. His current work lies at the intersection of perception, reasoning, motor control and robotics. Nicolas has a broad interest in many areas of AI and machine learning and, beyond robotics, has made contributions to the theory and applications of reinforcement learning, unsupervised learning, probabilistic models and inference, multi-agent systems, large multimodal models and more. Prior to joining Google DeepMind Nicolas was a postdoctoral researcher at the Gatsby Unit (University College London). He completed his PhD and a MSc in neuroinformatics at the University of Edinburgh,, a MSc in neuroscience at the University of Oxford and a BSc in software engineering at the Hasso-Plattner-Institute of the University of Potsdam. Nicolas is an ELLIS Fellow and Honorary Professor at University College London.
